The sheer size and spread and influence of world counterfeit activity shows the enormity of the issue for companies, regulators and communities: * the World Health Organisation estimates that 5% of all medications sold around the world each year are counterfeit; * US automobile manufacturers and suppliers are losing the equivalent of 210,000 worker positions worldwide because of the manufacture and sale of counterfeit auto parts; * the computer software industry as a whole is losing $12-16 billion per year because of rampant piracy and counterfeiting; this represents some 40 percent of all software industry revenues; * in the audiovisual products market global sales of counterfeit music recordings are estimated to amount to US$4.5 billion; * in the world-wide aircraft industry, the bogus, tampered and unapproved parts inventory is currently valued at US$45 billion. In some industries the problem extends beyond new products, to the passing off of below-spec production over-runs, the recycling of used parts as new, and the resurrection of parts whose useful life has expired. According to the 2000 National Retail Security Survey conducted by the University of Florida, US retailers lost more than US$29 billion from “inventory shrinkage”, equal to 1.7% of total sales. Losses to shrinkage in the Australian retail sector are estimated at $2 billion each year. Reliable application of source tagging security measures can decrease the rate of shrinkage by up to 50%. Electronic article surveillance (EAS) was introduced to reduce shrinkage. Source tagging involves the insertion of electronic security devices into consumer goods at the point of manufacture or packaging. Source tagging not only delivers the traditional benefits of reduced shrinkage, but actively boosts sales by facilitating “open merchandising” – where products are freely and openly displayed rather than locked away or placed behind service counters. Creative Solutions to Security Packaging Creative Logistics develops solutions for its clients, by combining an understanding of the the inputs to the product manufacturing process (production, labelling, documentation, packaging, distribution) with access to a range of suitable security technologies and expertise in their application to specific end uses. Our solutions are tailored specifically to the customer products to ensure they are cost efficient. Creative Logistics has developed an impressive set of proprietary technologies designed to meet a range of product identification needs. We also have access to a range of security products and technologies available worldwide. (For example various RFID tags, EAS source tags and holograms). These products can be combined to provide covert and/or overt security and authentication. Laminated Security Film Creative Logistics has developed a new process for the packaging of a wide variety of security products. The technology involves the "trapping" of intelligent media such as security inks, holograms, microchips, IR and UV inks, laser etched images or optically variable devices between two or more layers of plastic films. The Laminated Security Film ensures that the security device(s) remain viable, but at the same time ensures that the integrity of the parent product is not jeopardised. The primary packaging then becomes a cost-effective anti-counterfeit system that is an integral part of the product. This technology has a number of key advantages. Whilst an important function for this technology is to provide anti-counterfeiting security for products, it also has the ability to be a cost effective marketing tool to promote brand identification and authenticity. * Product Protection - provides a highly secure means of communicating to consumers that a product is safe and authentic, through the use of covert/overt security features. * Product Integrity - because it is enclosed between layers of the primary product packaging, there is no contact of the security medium with the actual product, hence there are no issues of security devices coming into contact with tablets or other sensitive products. * Cost-Effective - the security device(s) are applied to the packaging during manufacture and conversion. Other forms of security are commonly applied to outer packaging layers, or are applied at later additional stages of the packaging of the product that are time and cost expensive. * Integrated into Manufacturing - because the security device is already applied to the film prior to the packaging process, there is no impact on existing processes * Tamper Evidence - as the lamination is permanent, any attempt to pull it apart is readily recognised. * Difficult to Duplicate - because it is permanently enclosed within layers, the device itself is further protected from those who may try to duplicate it. Optically Variable Devices (OVD's) Where there is potential for counterfeit activity to occur, concealed devices are important as a means of positively identifying genuine product. However this usually entails the use of additional reading or verifying technology to determine authenticity. This is usually not possible at the point of inspection or sale depending on the complexity of the security technology employed. It is thus important to also provide some visual means of verifying a product’s likely authenticity. This is ideal where the public or Customs officials are involved. In recent years a range of so-called optically variable devices have been developed as a means of labelling authentic products. These devices vary their appearance depending on the angle of incoming light. Holograms are one obvious example. These OVD devices can be applied as inks in the printing process for various forms of packaging, and their ease of application and low costs make them highly effective. Creative Logistics has developed a proprietary printing “ink” which can achieve this effect when appropriately applied. The Optichrom™ product range has been designed, developed and manufactured in Australia. These OVD’s offer a number of advantages to manufacturers and retailers alike. * Product authenticity is instantaneous via a sharp shift from one colour to another depending on the angle of view – no additional reading device is required * Optichrom™ is extremely difficult to duplicate by unauthorized parties – it is provided through a secure network and not available to anyone else * A wide range of colour shades is available which allows for regular switching of the colour, making it harder for potential counterfeiters to duplicate * Can be applied in many printing applications to almost any packaging mediums such as labels, cartons, swing tags, tamper evident tags, plastic films, bottles, aerosols, syringes etc. * Optichrom™ can be incorporated into existing corporate logos, to ensure a consistent and secure corporate style * Can be used in conjunction with other covert security devices to provide a multi-layered security solution * As it is applied during the manufacture of the packaging itself there is no negative impact on production lines or manufacturing costs * Is a low cost highly effective overt authentication method that is difficult to duplicate Top of Page Home |
